Résumé

L’impuissance masculine connaît actuellement un regain d’intérêt aux plans nosographique, épidémiologique et clinique. Dans une première partie, les conceptions de l’impuissance masculine sont analysées: l’introduction du terme de dysfonction érectile et la question de la définition des degrés et des seuils de gravité et de fréquence ne font pas l’objet de définitions précises ni de consensus. Dans la deuxième partie, les différentes enquêtes épidémiologiques visant à établir la prévalence de l’impuissance masculine sont présentées et critiquées au plan de leurs méthodes. Jusqu’en 1990, la prévanlence de l’impuissance était établie entre 5% et 10% de la population masculine. A partir de 1994, les estimations varient de 5% à 50% selon les critères retenus dans les enquêtes réalisées en population générale.

Abstract

Male impotence is currently a matter of increasing interest and change at the conceptual, epidemiological and clinical levels. The first part of the paper provides a historical perspective on conceptions of male impotence: the introduction of the new concept of erectile dysfunction and the problem of its definition, its frequency and its degree are discussed. It is argued that there is no consensus on definitions. In the second part, epidemiological studies among the general population and in inclinical samples are presented and their methodology is discussed. Until 1990, the prevalence of male impotence was estimatod between 5% and 10%. Since 1994, estimates have shifted to from 5% to 50% depending on criteria used in studies.
