La carrière de François LA PEYRONIE (1679–1747) Chirurgien du Roi Louis XV fut prestigieuse.

Anobli en 1736, il vécut la transformation de la profession de barbier en celle de chirurgien.

La maladie qui porte son nom dans le monde entier est citée dans de nombreux documents anciens et de grands noms de la médecine s’y sont intéressés.

Abstract

François LA PEYRONIE was born on January 15th, 1679, in MONTPELLIER, France.

His father was a barber. La Peyronie qualified as Master Surgeon at 17 before starting a military career, after which he became surgeon to King Louis XV who raised him to the nobility.

Under the name of GIGOT de LA PEYRONIE he saw the birth of the French Royal Academy of Surgery of which he was the second President.

Malformations of the penis have intrigued man since time began.

Descriptions have been found dating back to 550 B.C.

Although we have learnt much since then, considerable research still remains to be carried out before we can fully understand this disease, which is one of the rare instances to bear the name of a french surgeon throughout the world.
